McAllen Scholarship Report 2001

At the request of B. Crane, Director, McAllen Pan American Round Table, the Scholarship Committee is pleased to provide the following scholarship information:

To celebrate the new millennium, the McAllen Pan American Round Table (PART) awarded three scholarships of $1,000 each to three McAllen High Schools, for a total of $3,000. The criteria for student candidates were that they be in the upper 25 percentile of the senior class and would attend either University of Texas - Pan American or South Texas Technical College. PART emphasized awarding scholarships to students who had financial need and who otherwise would not receive another scholarship.

The scholarship recipients were:

Johana Flores from McAllen High School. - Johana was nominated for Who's Who Among American High School Students and nominated for United States National Band Awards. She was a H.O.S.T. mentor preparing students for TAAS. She plans to be a teacher.

Claudia Vallalpando from Memorial High School. - Claudia was in the National Honor Society, Who's Who American Scholar, Volunteer in the Humane Society, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She plans to be a Physician Assistant.

Tisha Cantu from Nikki Rowe High School. - Tisha was in the National Honor Society, President of Engineering Club, competed at the State National Test of TSA, and volunteered extensively in Habitat for Humanity, Feast of Sharing, and Blood Drives.

The scholarship recipients attended the regular monthly luncheon of PART with their mothers and were individually recognized; they spoke of their plans to further their education. B. Crane, Director of PART, said that the scholarship recipients represented the best of local high schools and PART was proud to have awarded three scholarships.
